Livestock farming stands as one of the pillars supporting national economies and ensuring food security across the developing world. From providing essential proteins to creating jobs in rural areas, this sector plays multiple roles that extend far beyond the farm gate. Understanding its economic importance and the challenges it faces is crucial as global demand for animal products continues to rise.

Economic powerhouse in developing nations

The livestock sector has emerged as a dynamic economic force in developing countries. Globally, livestock contributes approximately 40 percent of total agricultural GDP across developing countries, though this varies significantly between 15 and 80 percent in individual nations. This sector supports the livelihoods of over 1.3 billion people worldwide, representing one in five people on the planet.

In India, the livestock sector has shown impressive growth momentum. Between 2014-15 and 2022-23, the sector grew at a compound annual growth rate of 7.38 percent at constant prices. The sector’s contribution to India’s total Gross Value Added reached 4.66 percent in 2022-23, while its share within the agricultural sector increased from 24.32 percent in 2014-15 to 30.38 percent in 2022-23. More recently, government data shows livestock contributing 5.50 percent to total GVA at current prices, demonstrating the sector’s expanding economic footprint.

Inclusive growth through diverse production systems

Livestock production systems range from smallholder farms to commercial operations, each playing a distinct role in economic development. Smallholder systems are particularly important for inclusive growth, as they provide opportunities for resource-poor households.

Empowering marginal farmers

In India, small and marginal farmers who own less than 2 hectares of land account for more than 85 percent of all farmers, yet they cultivate only 47.3 percent of total crop area. For these households, livestock ownership provides crucial income diversification. Research indicates that livestock ownership reduces poverty severity, with these households showing better resilience compared to those without livestock.

The accessibility of livestock farming to marginal farmers is remarkable. Approximately 87 percent of livestock farmers own less than two hectares, making it a scalable enterprise for those with limited land resources. This characteristic makes livestock farming particularly valuable for inclusive rural development.

Multiple benefits beyond economic returns

Livestock keeping provides diverse advantages that strengthen rural households against various challenges.

Nutritional security

Livestock-derived foods provide nutrient-dense sources of essential micronutrients, especially important for vulnerable populations including rural women and children. These foods supply rich sources of vitamin B12, iron, zinc, and other crucial nutrients that help combat malnutrition. India now ranks first globally in milk production, contributing 24.76 percent of global milk production, with per capita milk availability reaching 471 grams per day compared to the world average of 329 grams.

Income generation and risk mitigation

Livestock serve multiple economic functions for rural households. They generate income through sales of milk, eggs, meat, and other products. Beyond direct sales, animals provide draught power, transport, manure to enhance soil nutrients, and act as social security and insurance in times of need. This multifunctional nature makes livestock particularly valuable during agricultural shocks like drought or crop failure, when animals can be sold to meet urgent household needs.

The livestock revolution and rising demand

The demand for livestock products is experiencing unprecedented growth, driven by powerful demographic and economic forces.

Key drivers of demand

Population growth, urbanization, and increasing incomes in developing countries are driving rapidly increasing demand for livestock products. This phenomenon has been termed the “Livestock Revolution.” As urbanization accelerates, particularly in Africa and Asia, consumption patterns shift toward higher animal protein intake.

By 2050, almost 70 percent of total meat and milk consumption in Africa is expected to come from cities, with urban dwellers demanding significantly more animal products compared to today. This urbanization of demand creates both opportunities and challenges for the livestock sector.

Income-driven consumption

Rising incomes directly correlate with increased expenditure on livestock products. Between 1980 and 2002, total meat production in the developing world tripled, growing from 45 to 134 million tons. Much of this growth concentrated in countries experiencing rapid economic development, particularly in East Asia, and focused on poultry and pigs.

Environmental challenges and sustainability concerns

Despite its economic importance, the livestock sector faces significant environmental challenges that must be addressed for sustainable growth.

Greenhouse gas emissions

Livestock supply chains account for 7.1 gigatons of CO2 equivalent, representing 14.5 percent of global anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. Cattle production, including both beef and milk, is responsible for approximately two-thirds of this total, largely due to methane emissions from rumen fermentation. These emissions are caused by feed production, enteric fermentation, animal waste, and land-use change.

Resource scarcity and competition

The sector faces increasing competition for natural resources, particularly land and water. Livestock farming occupies about 77 percent of global agricultural land yet provides only 18 percent of the world’s calories. This disproportionate resource use leads to concerns about deforestation, habitat destruction, and soil degradation.

Water consumption presents another challenge. Production of livestock products requires extensive water resources for feed crop irrigation, animal drinking, waste cleaning, and processing. In regions with limited water availability or competing demands, this high water footprint raises sustainability concerns.

Pathways to sustainability

Solutions exist to reduce environmental impacts while meeting growing demand. Improved animal diets, better manure management, and enhanced productivity can help reduce emissions while maintaining or increasing production. Increasing livestock efficiency through better breeding, pasture management, and veterinary care could enable greater production with a smaller environmental footprint.

Looking ahead

The livestock sector stands at a crossroads. Rising global demand offers tremendous opportunities for economic development and poverty reduction, particularly for smallholder farmers in developing countries. Yet this growth must be balanced against environmental sustainability and resource constraints. Success will require targeted policies that support productivity improvements, facilitate access to markets and services, and implement sustainable management practices tailored to local contexts.
