How we see ourselves in relation to the natural world shapes our attitudes, behaviors, and ultimately our impact on the environment. This psychological connection-known as environmental identity-has emerged as a key concept in understanding why some people engage deeply with environmental protection while others remain disconnected. For Indigenous communities worldwide, this relationship takes on profound dimensions, forming the foundation of cultural identity, spiritual practice, and sustainable livelihood for thousands of years.

What is environmental identity?

Environmental identity refers to how individuals perceive their connection to the non-human natural environment and how this connection influences their worldview and behavior. Psychologist Susan Clayton first formalized this concept in 2003, describing it as part of our self-concept that develops through personal history, emotional bonds, and perceived similarities with nature.

Think of it as the answer to questions like: Do you see yourself as part of nature or separate from it? Does spending time outdoors feel essential to who you are? When you witness environmental destruction, does it feel like a personal loss?

Environmental identity goes beyond simply caring about the environment. It becomes woven into how people define themselves. The Environmental Identity Scale developed by Clayton measures individual differences in this stable sense of interdependence and connectedness with nature. Research consistently shows that people with stronger environmental identities demonstrate more pro-environmental attitudes, engage more frequently in sustainable behaviors, and show greater support for environmental protection policies.

The social construction of environmental identity

Environmental identity does not develop in isolation. It forms through a complex interplay of social interactions, cultural contexts, and personal experiences with nature. The communities we belong to, the values we inherit, and the groups we identify with all shape how we relate to the natural world.

Social influences that shape our environmental connection

Several social factors influence how environmental identity develops and expresses itself:

Community and social networks: The people around us significantly influence our relationship with nature. Communities that emphasize ecological stewardship, sustainable practices, or spiritual connections to land tend to cultivate stronger environmental identities among their members. Conversely, communities where nature is viewed primarily as a resource to exploit may foster weaker environmental connections.

Group membership: Professional associations, educational institutions, recreational groups, and cultural organizations can reinforce or challenge one’s environmental identity. Someone who joins a hiking club, works in conservation, or belongs to a community with strong outdoor traditions will likely develop a more robust environmental identity.

Political and ideological frameworks: Political beliefs often correlate with particular views about the natural world. These affiliations influence how individuals interpret environmental issues, their perceived responsibility toward ecological protection, and their willingness to support environmental policies. Environmental identity thus becomes intertwined with broader political identities.

Values and worldviews: Cultural values about humanity’s place in nature vary significantly across societies. Some worldviews position humans as stewards of creation, others as masters over nature, and still others as equal participants in the web of life. These foundational beliefs profoundly shape environmental identity formation.

How environmental identity predicts behavior

Research demonstrates that environmental identity strength correlates positively with pro-environmental behaviors across multiple domains. People who strongly identify with nature are more likely to conserve energy, reduce waste, choose sustainable products, support environmental organizations, and advocate for protective policies.

Beyond identity strength, researchers have identified another dimension called environmental identity salience-how frequently people think about their relationship with nature during daily activities. This matters because even someone with a strong environmental identity may not consistently act on it unless that identity remains active in relevant situations.

Indigenous environmental identity: a distinct relationship with nature

Indigenous peoples around the globe make up approximately six percent of the global population, yet they sustainably care for around eighty percent of the world’s remaining biodiversity. This remarkable stewardship reflects an environmental identity that differs fundamentally from Western conceptions-one characterized by deep integration rather than separation between humans and nature.

Key characteristics of Indigenous environmental identity

Indigenous environmental identities typically share several distinctive features that set them apart from mainstream Western approaches to nature:

Native territorial connection: The central characteristic that guides Indigenous identities derives from a historical and distinctive bond with and belonging to lands and territories. This is not merely living in a place but maintaining deep relationships with specific landscapes over generations, often thousands of years.

Environmental protector role: Indigenous peoples frequently function as guardians of their territories and conservators of biodiversity. The identities, cultures, spirituality, and life ways of Indigenous Peoples and local communities are inextricably linked to biodiversity. This protective role emerges naturally from their identity rather than as an external obligation.

Historical and cultural continuity: Despite centuries of colonization, displacement, and cultural pressure, Indigenous communities have maintained their connections to ancestral lands and traditional ecological practices. Indigenous Peoples and local communities steward an estimated 50% or more of the world’s land, including many of its most pristine ecosystems.

Holistic worldview: Most Indigenous worldviews do not separate humans from nature but view them as interconnected parts of a single system. This contrasts sharply with Western dualistic thinking that positions humans as separate from and superior to nature.

Geographic isolation and cultural distinctiveness

Many Indigenous communities have historically inhabited geographically isolated areas-remote forests, deserts, mountains, coastal regions, and islands. This isolation, while limiting access to certain modern amenities, has served a protective function for traditional knowledge and practices.

The geographical separation from mainstream society has allowed Indigenous communities to develop and maintain distinctive cultural traditions, languages, and approaches to environmental interaction. Indigenous Peoples are custodians of unique knowledge systems, innovations and practices that have been passed down through generations.

Harmony with the natural environment

The relationship between Indigenous communities and their environments fundamentally differs from the extractive approach that dominates modern industrial societies. Rather than attempting to dominate or control nature, Indigenous approaches typically emphasize reciprocity, balance, and sustainable coexistence.

Subsistence strategies based on ecological knowledge

Indigenous communities have developed sophisticated livelihood practices that depend on intimate knowledge of local ecosystems while maintaining their ecological integrity. These approaches include:

Traditional agriculture: The milpa, a traditional farming system of the Indigenous Maya, is a sustainable agricultural model that involves rotating agricultural plots within a forested area. These systems maintain high levels of biodiversity and soil fertility while providing food security across generations.

Hunting and gathering: Traditional hunting and gathering practices typically include protocols that prevent overexploitation-seasonal restrictions, taboos on harvesting certain species during vulnerable periods, and spiritual practices that reinforce respectful relationships with prey animals and plant resources.

Pastoralism: In grassland and semi-arid regions, Indigenous pastoral communities have developed mobile herding strategies that work with natural cycles rather than against them, moving livestock to follow seasonal vegetation patterns and allowing ecosystems to recover.

Agroforestry: Many Indigenous communities practice sophisticated agroforestry that integrates trees with crops and livestock, creating productive systems that mimic natural forest structures while providing diverse food sources and maintaining ecological functions.

Traditional ecological knowledge and climate adaptation

Indigenous Knowledge is understood as a complex, adaptive system of knowledge, beliefs, and practices that have been culturally transmitted over generations. This knowledge encompasses understanding of local species, ecosystem dynamics, weather patterns, and sustainable resource management techniques refined over centuries.

Because of their deep ecological knowledge, Indigenous Peoples were among the first to notice the early signs of climate change. Their observations complement scientific monitoring by providing long-term baselines and place-specific details that instruments cannot capture.

Traditional knowledge proves particularly valuable for climate adaptation. Indigenous Peoples’ holistic view of community and environment are a major resource for adapting to climate change. This includes knowledge of drought-resistant crops, water conservation techniques, and strategies for coping with extreme weather that have proven effective over many generations.

The transmission of environmental identity across generations

Indigenous environmental identity is not merely inherited but actively transmitted through multiple channels. Stories, ceremonies, hands-on teaching, and everyday practices all serve to pass ecological knowledge and environmental values from elders to youth.

This intergenerational transfer ensures that environmental identity remains living knowledge rather than abstract information. Young people learn not just what to do but why it matters, absorbing the spiritual and cultural dimensions alongside practical skills.

However, this transmission faces growing threats. The surrounding environment is changing so rapidly that the evolution of Indigenous traditional knowledge systems cannot keep up. Climate change disrupts the predictability that traditional knowledge relies upon, potentially severing chains of knowledge transmission that have continued unbroken for millennia.

Why Indigenous environmental identity matters for everyone

Understanding Indigenous environmental identity offers more than academic interest. As environmental crises intensify, Indigenous knowledge and approaches provide tested alternatives to destructive patterns of human-nature relations.

Indigenous Peoples and local communities are custodians of more than a third of the world’s most important areas for biodiversity, and researchers have found that 42 percent of land managed by Indigenous Peoples and local communities is in good ecological condition. This track record demonstrates that Indigenous environmental identities translate into measurable conservation outcomes.

Recognizing Indigenous rights to land and self-determination is not just a matter of justice-it is an effective climate strategy. Indigenous Peoples and local communities manage nearly a quarter of the Earth’s surface and vast ocean areas that, together, hold 80% of the Earth’s biodiversity. Supporting their stewardship supports planetary health.

Moving forward: bridging knowledge systems

The global environmental crisis demands that we draw on all available knowledge and approaches. Bridging Indigenous knowledge and scientific knowledge systems will complement each other, creating more comprehensive understanding and more effective solutions.

This integration must occur respectfully, recognizing Indigenous peoples as knowledge holders with agency rather than as subjects of study. Climate projects must be co-developed with Indigenous communities, incorporating their free, prior, and informed consent at every stage.

Environmental identity-whether Indigenous or non-Indigenous-shapes how we relate to the natural world and determines whether we act as its protectors or exploiters. Strengthening this identity, learning from those who have maintained it across millennia, may be essential to navigating the environmental challenges ahead.
